Dear NECS Community,

Spring and early summer at New Era Creative Space have been filled with creativity, growth, powerful youth-led presentations, and wonderful community gatherings. From local summits to our annual benefit, the past three months have reminded us of the incredible power of the arts to transform lives, build community, and empower the next generation.

Here is a look back at what we accomplished together in April, May, and June!

April marked the official launch of our Creative Academy, which will welcome more children from the Peekskill School District in the Fall! In collaboration with our school district, starting in September, children will be bused from their schools to NECS for afterschool programs. We are thrilled to expand our programming and continue fostering environments where youth can unlock their creative potential, build confidence, and discover new artistic passions.

Celebrating Our Volunteers

Volunteers are the heart and soul of NECS. Throughout the month of April, we proudly highlighted the dedicated individuals who give their time, energy, and love to our organization. We wrapped up the month with a warm Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, bringing together core volunteers to honor their vital contributions. Thank you to everyone who helps make our mission possible!

Art, Advocacy & Community Connections

As an annual tradition, May turned our center into a vibrant gallery showcasing our students' incredible hard work. Our walls were transformed by original artwork, giving our young artists a proud moment to share their talents with the community.

Our annual Art in Bloom Showcase brought together 98 participants (30 youth and 68 adults) for an unforgettable event! Students across our programs presented what they learned throughout the year, while our art students showcased their portfolio pieces. We wrapped up a successful program year with a house full of proud parents, joyful students, and a community potluck.

Furthermore, four of our students attended the Call to Men Summit, an inspiring event focused on leadership, advocacy, and community. Highlights included meeting NYC Council Member Dr. Yusef Salaam and renowned poet Fanta Ballo!

Celebrations, History & Looking Ahead

As part of the citywide Peekskill Open Studios, NECS opened its doors to feature artwork created by our talented staff! Roughly 100 visitors stopped by the center to appreciate the creative talents of the team that leads our youth every day.

A week later we hosted our annual benefit, Creativity Ignited — a truly moving and joyous celebration of another year of accomplishment! With over 100 attendees—including local students, community members, and returning alumni—the energy in the room was electric.

Our students spoke from their hearts, touching the audience deeply. One of our alumni, who served as the MC and spent months volunteering to organize the benefit, shared how NECS has been an integral part of his growth story. It was deeply meaningful to see so many alumni in the audience supporting the next generation.

Thanks to your incredible generosity, we raised over $50,000! These funds directly support our ongoing programs and youth empowerment initiatives.

To honor Juneteenth, our students delivered a stellar performance at Pugsley Park as part of the City of Peekskill's presentation. Over 100 audience members watched our youth present an original play they spent two months researching, writing, and creating. This year’s performance focused on the history of the Southern Underground Railroad, showcasing both historical depth and powerful youth talent.

Getting Ready for Summer Camp!

We spent the remainder of June training our dedicated summer staff, deep cleaning, and preparing our space for summer camp. We are so excited to welcome our campers for an extraordinary summer experience ahead!
